Moxie IS Learning
"I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”
Pablo Picasso
When I started my journey- I knew absolutely nothing about weight lifting, cardiovascular health, or good nutrition. Well, other than the the countless books and diet plans I had invested my money in and started ...but never finished. Sound familiar? I probably have them all, as I was always looking for "the" answer that would change my life. That craziness stopped in 2007 when I decided to stop looking for the answers in others and start learning for myself.
I began with Weight Watchers and learned the basics of portion control and calories, and then expanded my knowledge by reading actual nutrition books and articles (blogs were not QUITE as reliable or plentiful as they are now).
I hired my trainer, Adam, who taught me weight lifting and cardio basics, and I asked him endless questions. Relentless I was....curious and craving more knowledge as the pounds came off. Then, I started adding to that knowledge (funny how you typically find nutrition and exercise information in the same places).
I wanted to be successful and goal oriented, so I studied the works of other successful motivational people and learned about vision boards, goals, and systems. In short, if my mind posed a question, i found the answer. That information has just built up and increased with time and practice.
in 2011 I studied the Personal Trainer course from NASM and passed! Whoa! What a leap of faith from where I was to where I wanted to be. I told myself, "Self, you have 2 years to make this PT thing go (that is how long before re-certification is necessary) and then if it doesn't work...we are moving on."
Here we are 2013, with now 2 years as a trainer, experience with a variety of clients and locations, and and a whole new batch of information to add to the woman who used to know next to nothing. I am getting ready to re-certify and so excited about the new material I get to study. This industry is ever-changing and there is always something new to learn. So...what stops you from learning all YOU can?
Tips to Learning About Fitness
1. Make sure the sources are legit. Someone selling you supplements for instance who DOESN'T live a healthy lifestyle might not be a good source of information. Look for good websites and blogs that are information based - not product based. Find more than one source to "back it up" if need be.
2. if you want to be fit and healthy. Study the habits those people do. Ask questions and don't be intimidated. I bet they have all had to learn it as well.
3. When a question or idea pops in to your head -search for the answer. No question is dumb or silly. The more knowledge you gain on a subject the more you learn. Amazingly, it duplicates itself. For instance. I studied up on insulin resistance during weight loss and discovered I had adrenal fatigue and learned about hormones and weight loss....all from the same question.
In short...learn, learn, learn, all you can! Even if it just 5 min in the car waiting to pick up or drop off your kids. The internet is easily accessible and full of good information!
